Students in Boise State's Advanced Metals Program Sell Unique, Handcrafted Pieces at Flying M

Students from Boise State University’s advanced metals class will sell their unique, handcrafted jewelry from 6-10 p.m. Dec. 6 at Flying M Coffeehouse, located at the corner of 5th and Idaho streets in Boise. Most of the jewelry sold during the show, “What the Flux?” will be about $20 per piece.

Sixteen jewelers used unusual materials such as feathers, pebbles, countertop samples, silk flowers and even licorice, as well as more familiar elements such as silver, copper and brass. The rings, brooches, pendants, hair ornaments and bracelets they created showcase the skills the students have acquired during their studies. The “flux” in the sale’s title refers both to the process of transformation from the mundane to the extraordinary as well as to the borax compound used in soldering to prevent oxidation.

Professor Anika Smulovitz, who has taught art metals for five years at Boise State, said this is the first sale of individual students’ work, although R. Grey Gallery has hosted auctions of collaborative pieces. The inspiration for the sale comes from a larger classroom project, Smulovitz said.

“Students are learning about the business end of the crafts field while they explore the process of creating multiple pieces in a short period of time,” she said. “In addition to making the work, the class is responsible for all aspects of accounting and promotion of the sale.”
