What: Boise State’s annual Tunnel of Oppression production
When: 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Nov. 7 and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 8
Where: Student Union Hatch Ballroom

The Tunnel of Oppression, an annual interactive event that attracts hundreds of participants, will begin today at 10 a.m. in the Student Union Hatch Ballroom.

The tunnel is a visual and theatrical production that features presentations produced by Boise State students. This year’s production is directed by Boise State adjunct professor Steven “Monk” Wells and focuses on the theme “Make the Unjustice Visible.”

The Tunnel of Oppression has become a tradition at many campuses around the country since it was first presented at Western Illinois University in the early 1990s. In 1995, it was recognized with an award from the National Association of College and University Residence Halls. The tunnel is designed to help raise consciousness about various forms of oppression.

Visitors will be led through a series of connected rooms, each of which features a vignette performed by Boise State students and designed to help participants learn about different forms of discrimination. The tunnel will provide a very visual, dramatic story opportunity.

After each tour, participants will be able to discuss the program’s content in groups staffed by student leaders, administrators and counselors. The Boise State Cultural Center presents the tunnel to promote a campus-wide commitment to challenging oppression and to help recognize people and organizations actively committed to social justice.

Tours go through the tunnel every 30 minutes, and admission is free and open to the public.
