What: New sculpture honoring veterans, “Salute,” to be unveiled in special Veterans Day ceremony
When: Noon, Nov. 11
Where: Northeast entrance of the Boise State University Student Union Building

A new sculpture, “Salute,” will be unveiled tomorrow as part of Boise State University’s Veterans Day events. “Salute” honors veterans both on and off campus and is part of an extensive Student Union Building renovation. It was initiated by Boise State students who wanted to dedicate part of the renovated building to the men and women who have served the country.

A special dedication ceremony will begin at noon, featuring an Apache helicopter flyover, the posting of colors by the Boise State University ROTC and the national anthem. Speakers will include Britton Holdaway, the student who came up with the idea of the memorial, and student veteran Elizabeth Lahny, who will speak about what the project means to students and veterans.

Boise State’s Veterans Day events continue with a reception following the ceremony and a special presentation by poet Kenny Carnes at 7 p.m. Carnes will give a one-man performance, “Pieces of War: A Veterans Day Evening Performance with Kenny Carnes,” in the Student Union Hatch Ballroom.

Both events are free and open to the public, and free parking will be available during the events in the Lincoln Parking Structure on the corner of University and Lincoln avenues.

As part of the Student Union renovation, a request for veterans memorial proposals was sent to more than 4,000 artists. Kay Kirkpatrick’s installation design, a metal-and-stone sculpture featuring the silhouette of a soldier saluting, was chosen as the final project. In her artist’s proposal, Kirkpatrick wrote, “The salute as a gesture symbolizes both answering to duty and the individual who places working toward the benefit of others above themselves.”
