Boise State University Presents "I.O.U.S.A" as Part of the Perspectives Film Series

The Diverse Perspectives Film Series continues at Boise State University with the screening of “I.O.U.S.A.” at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 15 at the BSU West campus, Room 102E, in Nampa. An additional screening will take place at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 18 in the Student Union Special Events Center. The screenings are free and open to the public.

Each screening will feature an audience discussion after the film. In Nampa, Independent Television Service regional outreach coordinator Lynn Allen will lead the discussion; in Boise, Doug StanWiens, Idaho Preserve America Teacher of the Year and Timberline High School AP economics teacher, will help the audience understand the daily and future implications of the nation’s debt.

“I.O.U.S.A.” brings the daunting topic of the nation’s economic crisis to life by providing a provocative, sometimes humorous and ultimately inspirational look — one that also is non-partisan — at a passionate two-man crusade to halt our impending financial meltdown. “I.O.U.S.A.” is the story of former U.S. Comptroller General Dave Walker — the nation’s top accountant — and Concord Coalition executive director Bob Bixby, who travel like town criers across America on what they call a “Fiscal Wake Up Tour.” Town by town, they have been arming citizens with information about how we got into a sticky financial mess, why we must act right now to stop it, and what we each can do to begin to free the nation from the stranglehold of this colossal debt.

Acclaimed documentary director Patrick Creadon (whose “Wordplay” turned a crossword puzzle competition into an edge-of-your-seat sports drama) takes a witty, irreverent approach that changes a complex subject into something fascinating and moving. As he follows Walker and Bixby in their quest, Creadon tries answering the questions that have occurred to all of us: What is the national debt? What does it have to with us as everyday Americans? Can’t we just print more money? And why are people dedicating their very lives to fixing it before it’s too late?

Community Cinema is a partnership of the Independent Television Service (ITVS), Boise State University and Idaho Public Television.
