What: Boise State outreach experts Barbara Morgan and “Dr. Picklestein” will co-host fantastical chemistry demo show for Treasure Valley Girl Scouts
When: 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9
Where: Student Union Bishop Barnwell Room, Boise State campus

The science departments within Boise State University’s College of Arts and Sciences have an extensive K-12 outreach mission, from taking students on tours of the Idaho Bird Observatory to providing classroom workshops on forensic science. The goal is not only to help kids understand science, but also to help them understand how fun, exciting and important it can be.

That mission is shared and singularly broadcast by “Dr. Picklestein,” the mischievous alter ego of Boise State associate chemistry professor Henry Charlier. In a tie-dyed lab coat and matching rainbow wig, Dr. Picklestein spends most of his time raising the eyebrows and awareness of young people with his chemistry demonstration shows.

Glowing test tubes, foaming geysers and disappearing balloons are just a few of the tricks up Dr. Pickelstein’s sleeves, and he will present his best to a group of Treasure Valley Girl Scouts at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, in the Student Union Bishop Barnwell Room. The event will be co-hosted by former astronaut Barbara Morgan, a Boise State ambassador for scientific literacy. Together, they will help young women explore the lighter side of chemistry and encourage them to pursue more science education and related career paths.

“It turns out that women are often underrepresented in the sciences, and I fear it is a cultural thing, even in this day and age,” Charlier said. “Our mission is to show these young women that science is for them and to stimulate their interest.”

Charlier set a goal to see (and hopefully inspire) 2,000 K-12 students this year through demo shows and classroom seminars, and he already has connected with between 600 and 800 young people.
