News Release BOISE STATE NEWS RELEASE / December 12, 2008 'Dollars for Scholars' Bolsters Student Scholarship Fund for End-of-Year Online Giving Boise State University has announced an end-of-year online giving program called ‘Dollars for Scholars’ designed to bolster funding for student scholarships due to the downturn of the financial markets. Donors can make tax-deductible contributions through the university’s web site at www.boisestate.edu prior to Dec. 31. “Student scholarships are not in jeopardy for the current academic year, but may be in question for the future without new funds,” said Boise State Vice President for University Advancement Howard Smith. “Like most other colleges and universities, it appears that negative investment returns will cause a reduction in the overall funds that are available to distribute for student scholarships in the 2009-2010 academic year.” The Boise State University Foundation currently supports about 850 student scholarships through endowed accounts. The Foundation has experienced a significant drop in endowment earnings in the first four months of the fiscal year. Some endowments are not generating enough earnings to support the scholarship award. ‘Dollars for Scholars’ will better allow the Foundation and Financial Aid Office to distribute funds in the 2009-2010 academic year on a need and merit basis. “Private gifts are perhaps more important than ever during these uncertain economic times,” said Smith. “In spite of financial setbacks, Boise State remains steadfast in its pledge to prepare the next generation of students, and ‘Dollars for Scholars’ is essential for these opportunities to be realized.” For more information, contact the Boise State University Foundation at (208) 426-3276 or 1-800-341-6150. -30- Media Contact: Frank Zang, University Communications, (208) 426-3275, frankzang@boisestate.edu Boise State University is “The New U Rising” with record student enrollment, new academic buildings, additional degree programs and a growing research agenda.
