News Release EVENT NEWS / December 16, 2008 Boise State University Honors Martin Luther King Jr. with a Rally, Poetry Slam, Rebecca Walker Lecture Boise State University’s Martin Luther King Jr./Human Rights Celebration will honor the slain civil rights leader’s legacy with three events the week of Jan. 19. All events are free and open to the public. • The annual March and Rally will be held at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 19. Marchers may gather in the Student Union Building Hatch Ballroom on the second floor at 9:30 a.m.; the march begins at 10:45 a.m. and will culminate in a rally at the Boise City Hall Plaza. • A poetry slam at 7 p.m. Jan. 20 in the Student Union Hatch Ballroom will feature Patricia Smith. Smith is a well-known poetry performer who has read her work at venues from Stockholm to Georgia. Her book of poetry, “Blood Dazzler,” was a 2008 National Book Award Finalist. The book follows Hurricane Katrina from Aug. 23, 2005, when it formed, to its aftermath. The poet Mark Doty wrote, “With her radiant powers of empathy, her fiercely acute ear for the musical possibilities of American speech, and her undiluted rage, Patricia Smith makes in Katrina’s wake a sorrowful, unflinching, and glorious book.” She also is the author of “Teahouse of the Almighty,” which was a National Poetry Series winner. • The keynote presentation at 6 p.m. Jan. 22 in the Student Union Jordan Ballroom will feature noted activist, feminist and author Rebecca Walker. Walker’s most recent book is the memoir “Baby Love: Choosing Motherhood After a Lifetime of Ambivalence.” Her other works include “Black, White and Jewish: Autobiography of a Shifting Self” and “To Be Real: Telling the Truth and Changing the Face of Feminism.” Walker is considered one of the foremost voices of “third-wave” feminism and has spoken at universities such as MIT and Stanford as well as in front of companies such as Microsoft and Sony Music.
