ADVOCACY CONFERENCE ADDRESSES SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES
The third annual Progressive Student Advocacy Training Conference will be held Feb. 16 19 at Boise State University. Conference sessions will run from noon to 5 p.m. Feb. 16, in the Student Union Lookout and Alexander rooms; from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 17-18, in the Student Union Lookout, Alexander, Boyington and Brink rooms; and starting at 8 a.m. Feb. 19. Evening events may be added to the schedule. The conference is sponsored by the Boise State chapter of the Idaho Progressive Student Alliance and United Vision for Idaho.
Presenters from San Francisco, Portland and Boise will conduct workshops and train community organizers on how to address social problems such as racism and environmental degradation. Trainers David Roger and Moira Banmann, from the Western State Center, will lead a session on building alliances across color lines. The Boise chapter of the Northwest Earth Institute will conduct a session on voluntary simplicity, and a representative of the Rain Forest Action Network will present a session on non-violence skills. Other sessions will include community and coalition building, dismantling racism, fund-raising/grant writing, grass roots media, gender equality and more.
This conference is open to students from junior high through collage-age and other people or groups interested in community issues. Admission is free but space is limited; advance registration is recommended. Participants may also register at the door for workshops that are still available. Free breakfast will be provided Saturday and Sunday in the Lookout Room. Registration forms are available at the Student Activity Desk in the Student Union.
