BOISE STATE JAZZ BAND WINS NATIONAL HONOR

The Boise State University Jazz Ensemble has been selected to perform at the prestigious University of Notre Dame Collegiate Jazz Festival on March 2-3. This selection is the highest national honor the Boise State music department has ever garnered. The Notre Dame festival, now in its 43rd year, is the oldest collegiate jazz festival in the country.

The Boise State instrumental Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of music professor Ritchard Maynard, was one of nine university jazz bands selected to perform. Bands from 39 schools competed via audition tapes, and the winners were selected by a panel of jazz artists. Jazz bands chosen include ones from such top music programs as Loyola University of New Orleans, Florida State University and the University of Northern Iowa.

Maynard has led the 20-student ensemble for 11 years. During that time they have performed with jazz artists including Red Rodney, Chris Vadala, Bunky Green, Eric Marienthal, Richie Cole, Jon Faddis and Slide Hampton. The Boise State Jazz Ensemble has competed at the University of Nevada-Reno Jazz Festival three times, placing fourth in 1997 and third last year. The band will record their first CD later this spring.
