SLIDE SHOW, LECTURE TO FOCUS ON THIRD WORLD CRAFTSWOMEN
Paola Gianturco and Toby Tuttle, authors of "In Her Hands, Craftswomen Changing the World," will present a lecture and slide show at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, in the Student Union Jordan D Ballroom. The presentation will be based on interviews women around the world who make a living through their creative works.
Gianturco and Tuttle both have extensive experience in the advertising and public relations field. But when they learned that many poor women ply their crafts as a way to educate and improve their children’s lives, they took a sabbatical from their high-level jobs to seek out and tell the story of some of these heroic women.
The two women were featured on Oprah Winfrey’s television show Feb. 9, where they detailed how these women changed lives through their crafts. Not only are families better fed, but in some instances the income has allowed parents to keep their children at home instead of selling them into prostitution, reduced domestic violence as men’s perception of a women’s worth has increased and alleviated high infant mortality rates as families upgraded their housing, leading to improved sanitation.
The lecture is free and open to the public. Presented by the Boise State Women’s Center, it is a preview of a month of events celebrating women’s history month. For a complete schedule of the months’ events, visit news.boisestate.edu.
