CLASSICAL GUITAR DUO PEARL AND GRAY GIVE CONCERT AND MASTER CLASS

Classical guitar duo Julian Gray and Ronald Pearl, who have won critical acclaim from London to San Francisco, will give a concert and master class at Boise State University. The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, in the Morrison Center Recital Hall. The master class will be 9-11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, also in the Recital Hall.

The concert will feature Romantic era favorites of Chopin and Debussy as well as the duo’s most recent arrangements of sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti, which will be on their next CD release in April. They will also perform a new work, "Release," based on the Irish music of "Riverdance."

Pearl and Gray have received accolades as classical guitar masters by music critics from national and international classical publications, including Classical Guitar magazine and Soundboard. Acoustic Guitar magazine described their CD recordings as having "insightful, interpretations, rich guitar timbres and scintillating technique." Pearl and Gray have been invited to perform at many prestigious guitar festivals, including the Guitar Foundation of America convention, and have been featured on National Public Radio’s "Performance Today" and other radio and television shows.

Gray, who is on the faculty at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, teaches guitar and guitar history and literature and coaches chamber music. Pearl, who is on the music faculty of Loyola College in Baltimore, teaches music history, theory, guitar and chamber ensemble.

Pearl and Gray’s visit to Boise State is sponsored by the Boise State University Classical Guitar Society and the Idaho Classical Guitar Society. The master class is free and open to the public. Tickets for the concert are $10 general admission and $5 for students and seniors. For information, call 416-3980 or 426-1507.
