VOCAL JAZZ QUARTET ‘VOCALOGY’ HEADLINES BOISE STATE FESTIVAL
San Francisco-based vocal jazz quartet Vocalogy will bring the sounds of gospel, swing, be-bop and jazz to Boise State University at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, in the Student Union Jordan Ballroom. This concert is the finale of Boise State’s annual vocal jazz festival and will also feature the Boise State Vocal Jazz Ensemble.
Vocalogy, comprised of three men and one woman, has a vocal range of more than five octaves. Having performed at jazz festivals around the world, the quartet is known for improvised solos, tight ensemble works and complex harmonies. The performers are lead singer Christine Helferich, tenor David Thorne Scott, baritone John Knutson and bass Chris Morey. Pianist Gerhard Guter adds his voice to the mix on some numbers.
"The flexibility of this group constantly amazes me," said Jo Reece of Ontario, Ore., who saw Vocalogy perform last month. "They can switch from a bossa nova version of a Rachmaninoff theme to a heavy gospel tune, then follow that with an R&B Beatle’s song. My ears tell me I am hearing three different groups."
The festival is sponsored by the Boise State Vocal Jazz Ensemble, which has earned awards at regional festivals and competitions. The ensemble is directed by Boise State music professor Jim Jirak. The all-day festival on Feb. 9 will feature workshops for almost 30 junior and senior high school jazz choirs from the local region.
Tickets for the evening concert are $3 and may be purchased at the door. For information, call 426-4101 or 426-3980.
