BOISE STATE VOCAL JAZZ ENSEMBLE WINS HONOR AT HAMPTON FESTIVAL
The Boise State University Vocal Jazz Ensemble was chosen one of three Outstanding College Vocal Ensembles at the University of Idaho Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival the last week in February.
The 14 Boise State students were awarded a trophy and a cordless microphone for their outstanding performance in Moscow. The microphone was donated by Sousley Sound and Communications in Yakima, Wash., and is valued at $700.
The Boise State group was praised for authentic jazz style and improvised solos, superior tone quality and blend, choice of music, and excellent stage deportment. Specific kudos were given to the pianist of the ensemble, Justin Neilsen.
Most of the vocal ensembles at the festival were from colleges in Idaho and Washington, but some came from as far as Massachusetts. The judges were from Idaho, Washington and Utah.
This is the second time the Boise State Vocal Jazz Ensemble has earned awards at the Lionel Hampton Festival. Three years ago they were selected as the Vocal Combo winner. The group is under the direction of James Jirak, Boise State associate professor of choral music. They will be performing at the Gene Harris Jazz Festival Club Night at the Owyhee Plaza on Thursday, April 5.
