BOISE STATE AWARDS STUDENTS FOR OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE
Three students were recognized at the Boise State University Leadership Quest conference on March 2 as leaders who give outstanding service to Boise State and their communities.
Danielle McKinney, a freshman from Boise, received the Larry Selland Leadership Award for becoming a student leader so early in her career. She is the first student to chair the Women’s Center Advisory Board, she played a key role in planning the Women’s History Month Celebration at Boise State and she works as the Boise State Student Programs Board Family Activities Coordinator. McKinney said her experience in leadership roles at Boise State have helped her “learn how to listen and how to mediate.”
In the future McKinney hopes to get involved in legal issues that affect minority groups. McKinney, a 2000 graduate of Borah High School and the daughter of Phil and Carlene McKinney, is majoring in criminal justice and plans to attend law school after graduation.
Leah Taala, a senior, received the Director’s Award for outstanding leadership demonstrated by her commitment to student development, her service to Boise State organizations and the local community and her sensitivity to other people’s needs.
Taala has been an active member, leader and organizer in numerous organizations including: Hui-o-Aloha Club, Boise State Homecoming committee, Martin Luther King Jr./ Human Rights Celebration, Mirando Adelante, Idaho Progressive Student Alliance, Boise State Volunteer Services Board and Blue Thunder Marching Band. She also made the dean’s list in 1998. Taala plans to graduate from Boise State in December with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and pursue a master’s degree in either social sciences, public administration or student affairs.
Taala said it surprises her when other people view her as a leader because she feels she is just getting necessary jobs done. She is a 1996 graduate of Kahuku High School, in Hawaii, and the daughter of Hans and Theone Taala.
Eric Elliot, a senior, received the President’s Award for outstanding leadership for his contributions to Boise State and his continued leadership and service to Boise State organizations and the surrounding community. He has been a leader and an active member in several university organizations including: Pre-Med Club, Volunteer Services Board, Honors Association, English Majors Association, Sigma Tau Delta (English Honor Society) and American Medical Student Association. Elliot has also served as a Boise State ambassador, tutored for the Agency for New Americas, volunteered as a swimming instructor for the YMCA and volunteered at the emergency room at St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center. He has received several academic scholarships. After graduation, Elliot plans to attend medical school. Elliot is a 1996 graduate of Moscow High School and the son of Martin and Carolyn Elliot. He lives in Boise with his wife Heidi and his son Caleb.
