ENERGY ISSUES TOPIC OF 18th ANNUAL FRANK CHURCH CONFERENCE
Energy conservation and the uncertain future of the Wests energy supply will be discussed at a free daylong conference at Boise State University on Thursday, Nov. 15.
Leon Panetta, former White House chief of staff and retired congressman, will be the keynote speaker at the 18th annual Frank Church Conference on Public Affairs, "Lights Out in the American West? Oil, Water, Gas and Conservation Under Stress." Panetta will speak at 7 p.m. in the Student Union Jordan Ballroom.
A former U.S. representative from California and current chairman of the board for the Center for National Policy, Panetta founded and directs the Leon and Sylvia Panetta Institute for Public Policy at California State University-Monterey Bay.
Other conference highlights include an opening address at 8:45 a.m. by Karl Brooks, former Boise attorney, Idaho state senator and director of the Idaho Conservation League. Brooks is currently a professor of environmental law at the University of Kansas and a U.S. Supreme Court judicial fellow.
An open forum at 9:15 a.m. features commentary on public policy and political reality from Gov. Dirk Kempthorne, Rep. Mike Simpson, former Sen. Jim McClure, and former Rep. Pat Williams of Montana.
Theodore Roosevelt IV, great-grandson of the nations 26th president, will address the conference at lunchtime. Like his famous great-grandfather, Roosevelt, managing director for Lehman Brothers global investment bank, is an active conservationist. He currently serves as board chairman for the League of Conservation Voters, an organization that annually tracks the voting records of congressional members.
