Idaho’s
official 9/11 remembrance ceremonies will include a variety of speakers and
events designed to honor those lost in the terrorist attacks, as well as the
first responders who assisted the survivors. Gov. Dirk Kempthorne, Mayor Brent
Coles, Police Chief Donald Pierce, Father Demitri of St. Constantine and
Helen Greek Orthodox Church, Boise State University communication professor
Peter Wollheim and folk singer Rosalie Sorrels will begin with speeches and
musical presentations at 5 p.m. on the steps
of the Capitol Building.
At 6 p.m., following a moment of silence,
participants will walk up 8th Street towards the Veterans Administration
building, then back down 6th Street to Capitol Park. Closing ceremonies will
include a Native American blessing and chant, an Honor Guard folding of the
flag, a performance by the St. Paul’s Church choir, dances and readings. Teams
of massage therapists will be available for marchers.
Project Touch International (PTI), a Boise-based
non-profit organization that provides holistic therapy services to emergency
responders, is coordinating the event. PTI twice sent teams of massage
therapists to Ground Zero workers following the Sept. 11 terrorists attacks, and
plans to return to lower Manhattan public schools in October.
