WEEKLONG ACTIVITIES PROMOTE ALCOHOL AWARENESS
Boise State University has many campus events
planned for National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week, Oct. 20 – 26. The
remains of a vehicle from an alcohol-related accident will be displayed in the
Quad all week with response boards set up nearby. Passers-by are invited to
write on the boards to discuss the issues associated with alcohol use. Also, by
participating in the daily events of Alcohol Awareness Week (see event listings
below), students can collect Casino Night Bucks for use Friday night.
Monday, October 21:
 | Students are invited to take the No Drinking
Challenge. Between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the Student Union Building, sign up
to join students from across the nation in taking a pledge to consume no
alcohol for one week. Students who take the pledge will receive a free
bracelet to publicize their commitment. |
 | A candlelight vigil will begin at 8:30 p.m.
between Chaffee and Morrison halls. Students are invited to commemorate
their family and friends that have been affected by alcohol or an alcohol
related accident by lighting a candle and reflecting on how alcohol abuse
affects all of us. |
Tuesday, October 22:
 | At 8 p.m. in the Special Events Center there
will be a pre-release showing of the summer blockbuster "Men In Black
II". Students are invited to this free alternative evening event for
alcohol-free fun. |
Wednesday, October 23:
 | A Campus Community Forum, led by the Health
and Wellness Center director Ferd Schlapper, will take place at noon in the
Gipson Room in the Student Union Building. A group of campus and community
residents will discuss high-risk drinking, including the scope of the
problem, secondary effects of assaults, harassment, property damage,
academic impact and other concerns. Those in the campus community are
invited to attend and learn about these issues. |
 | Join in the fun at an Intramural Capture the
Flag contest at 8 p.m. on the Quad. This event is open to students who want
to show up and be placed on teams for a fun alternative-evening event. |
Thursday, October 24:
 | The Ada County Sheriffs Department will be
available from 5 – 7 p.m. at the Table Rock Café in the Student Union
Building to answer questions about the laws surrounding alcohol use,
including providing information on DUIs and MIPs. |
Friday, October 25:
 | The REC Center will be sponsoring a wiffle
ball tournament at 7 p.m. at the REC Center on Friday and Saturday.
Registration takes place Mon, Oct. 14 – Sun, Oct. 20. This event offers
another opportunity to support Alcohol Awareness Week by participating in a
healthy, alcohol-free activity. For more information on this event, contact
the REC Center at 426-1131. |
 | The College Bowl will kick off at 7 p.m. in
the Student Union Jordan Ballroom. Student, faculty and staff teams may
register for this ultimate trivia contest. Many prizes will be awarded,
including the grand prize, tickets to the No Doubt concert on Nov. 8.
Registration packets are available at the Student Involvement desk and will
be accepted until 5 p.m. on Oct. 25. There is no registration fee. |
 | From 8 – 11 p.m., the Jordan Ballroom will
be a casino. Casino Night Bucks can be spent on games of chance such as
poker and roulette. For those not participating in the College Bowl or
casino events, there will be Karaoke and free mocktails (alcohol-free
cocktails). |
Saturday, October 26:
 | The wiffle ball tournament continues at 7 p.m.
at the Rec Center. |
 | The final event that supports Alcohol
Awareness Week is Games Night, from 12:30 - 3:30 a.m. at the Games Center in
the Student Union Building. There will be free bowling, pool and arcade
games between these hours for students. |
Each event aims to educate students on the
dangers of abusing alcohol or offers alternatives to drinking. All events are
free to students, and all students are encouraged to attend events, collect
Casino Night Bucks and enjoy an alcohol-free week.
