Award-winning Viennese ensemble, the Artis String Quartet,
will perform a concert for the Boise Chamber Music Series and will also give a
free mini-concert open to everyone.
The concert at 8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 8, at the Morrison
Center Recital Hall is presented by the Boise Chamber Music Society and the
Boise State University music department. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for
students and seniors. For tickets or additional information, please call Jeanne
Belfy at 426-1216.
The mini-concert is at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, at the
Morrison Center Main Hall and is open to everyone. This performance is presented
as part of the Boise State Biennial High School Orchestra Festival, directed by
music professor Craig Purdy.
The Artis Quartet includes Peter Shuhmayer and Johannes
Meissl, violins; Herbert Kefer, viola; and Othmar Mueller, cello. This is their
second appearance in Boise. Founded in 1980, when its members graduated from the
Musikhochschule in Vienna, the Artis Quartet won the Cambridge and Evian string
quartet competitions, and began to study under the LaSalle Quartet in
Cincinnati. They have their own annual series at Vienna’s Musikverein, and
have recorded more than 20 CDs, winning awards such as the Grand Prix
International du Disque, Diapason d’Or, and others.
Friday’s concert will feature works by Mozart and Brahms
and contemporary composer Tania Gabrielle French's second quartet.
At the Thursday mini-concert, the quartet will perform
selections from their current touring repertoire and will discuss the fine
points of chamber music performance. This event is supported by the Idaho
Commission on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Boise Chamber
Music Society and the Boise State music department.
