The rich diversity of the Chicana and Chicano art
movement is brought into focus in a full-color, coffee table quality set of two
books just published by the Hispanic Research Center at Arizona State
University. In "Contemporary Chicana and Chicano Art," five paintings
by Boise State University adjunct art professor Alma Gomez are among
works by 150 artists chosen from submissions by more than 1,000 artists.
This ambitious compilation of works has a
companion Web site, www.latinoartcommunity.org,
where hundreds of images are displayed and the artists explain their works.
Many of Gomez’s paintings explore the blend of
cultural concepts of indigenous people and Catholic spirituality. "The
indigenous peoples’ successful fusion of various Catholic elements with their
own spiritual beliefs is similar to the ways Chicanos/as must adapt and blend
their Mexican and American heritages in order to create for ourselves our ethnic
identity," Gomez said in her artist’s statement. Examples of her work can
be found on the Latino art Web site.
