Chuck Guilford, an English professor at Boise State
University, will read from his new book of poetry, What Counts, at 7:30
p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, at the Log Cabin Literary Center, 801 South Capitol
Blvd. Admission is $4 for Log Cabin members and $6 for the public. A book
signing will follow the reading.
What Counts is a limited
edition chapbook from Limberlost Press that weaves through back roads and rivers
and the poet’s own reflections on mortality, family and memory. In
"Fishing for Me," Guilford explores the contradictions inherent in
trying to live a compassionate life and tricking fish to bite: And
all the while, I can’t help/ but wonder/ who’s fishing for me./ Who or what’s
out there/ somewhere, fishing for me?
Another poem, "Archaeology of the Trout Creek
Mountains" offers a vivid glimpse of how the region changed over time.
"Lochsa Morning" celebrates the joy of the here and now: Imagine
this life is your own life,/ this day is today./ Go down to the river/ and rinse
off your face.
Guilford has taught literature and creative writing for
more than two decades. His poems, short stories and essays have appeared in
magazines and journals throughout the country, including Poetry, College
English, Kansas Quarterly, Crab Creek Review and many others.
He has been director of the Idaho Writers Archive and has been a long-time
supporter of Log Cabin activities.
What Counts is available for
$10 through the Log Cabin Literary Center or directly from Limberlost Press, 17
Canyon Trail, Boise, Idaho, 83716. (Please add $3 shipping and 5 percent sales
tax.)
