The Boise State University All-Campus Concert Band will
present a special tribute concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, at the Boise
State Special Events Center.
Featured on the program will be Gov. Dirk Kempthorne as
guest narrator for "Liberty Fanfare," written by former conductor of
the Boston Pops, John Williams. This moving piece was commissioned and performed
for the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty, July 3, 1986. The narration,
which incorporates quotes from President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, expresses how
the Statue continues to shine as a symbol of liberty in our present day.
The program will also include "American Elegy,"
a piece by Frank Ticheli to celebrate the lives lost at Columbine High School.
Familiar compositions featuring a variety of musical styles will also be
presented. Euphonium soloist Mike Gerriston will perform on the "Maid of
the Mist Polka" by Herbert L. Clarke.
Although Gov. Kempthorne is an experienced speaker, this
will be his first time performing a dramatic oration with a concert band. As an
amateur, Kempthorne will be in good company, as most of the concert band members
are not professional performers. The 70-member All-Campus Concert Band,
conducted by interim director John King, is a cross-generational band with
musicians of all levels. The band consists of students from junior high to
college and community members from all walks of life, including a veterinary
technician, a retired banker, a Realtor, two engineers, an attorney and other
professionals. The band also includes eight of the 11 founding members of the
Kappa Kappa Psi honor society.
The general public is invited to the concert. Admission is
$5 for adults, $3 for seniors and free to students of all ages and Boise State
faculty and staff. For more information call 426-3980.
