BOISE STATE STUDENTS PRESENT SPEECH SHOWCASE DEC.
2
Boise State University communication students will present
their annual Speech Showcase at
7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2, in the Student Union Jordan
Ballroom. The event is free and open to the public.
Each of eight finalists from preliminary rounds of
judging, representative of about 1,000 students taking Communication 101, will
present an eight-minute speech to compete for over $500 in prize money, as
decided by a panel of distinguished judges. Rob Perez, a senior vice-president
for U.S. Bank, and major underwriter for the event, will present the awards.
Emeritus professor Robert Boren will EMCEE the program.
During the judges' deliberations, students’ names will
be placed in a hat and five speakers will be drawn to give impromptu speeches.
Communication department instructors will judge the impromptu round and the
winner will receive a $25 award.
The department’s goals in sponsoring this event are
two-fold: to provide models of and motivate speakers toward speech excellence,
and to celebrate successful communication in the public sphere.
