Boise State University kinesiology professor Linda
Petlichkoff is the new president of the Association for the Advancement of
Applied Sport Psychology. The international organization promotes the science
and professional practice of sport psychology, and includes more than 1,200
members from 22 different countries.
Petlichkoff assumed her new position at the organization’s
annual conference held in Tucson, Ariz. in early November. As president,
Petlichkoff will oversee AAASP activities for 2003 through the annual conference
next October in Philadelphia. The conference provides a forum for researchers,
professionals and students to discuss the latest research and the application of
psychological principles in sport and exercise.
Petlichkoff joined Boise States faculty in 1987. She
conducts research involving participation by children and adolescents in
competitive sports and why some of them drop out. Petlichkoff is also a
consultant for The First Tee, a national program to bring affordable, accessible
golf to underserved youth in rural and urban areas. She is the co-author of
"Life Skills Curriculum," an instructors manual for the First Tee
Program.
According to Petlichkoff, Idaho institutions are
well-represented in AAASP leadership roles. A University of Idaho professor,
Damon Burton, is currently president-elect of the organization and will become
president after Petlichkoff completes her one-year term.
