BOISE STATE TO HOLD WINTER COMMENCEMENT DEC. 20

Boise State University will hold its 70th Commencement ceremony at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 20, at The Pavilion. Doors will open at 9 a.m. No ticket is needed for family and guests to attend, and parking is free.

Approximately 500 students are expected to attend the ceremony. In all, 1,086 students qualified for graduation since the May Commencement, earning a total of 1,132 degrees or certificates. The ceremony will include two large screens that will broadcast the graduates accepting their degrees so that those sitting farther away from the stage will be able to see individual graduates up close.

Five students will receive their doctoral degrees: Delta Cavner, Deborah Glaser, Jill Haunold, Eric Kellerer and Ernesto Ramirez. The Commencement speaker will be Kimberly Woods, who is receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree in English education. Graduating music majors Warren Barnes and Mary Clayton Smith will perform a musical benediction.

A Silver Medallion — Boise State’s highest award — will be presented to Allen Dykman. A 1974 graduate of Boise State College, he started Dyke’s Electric in 1981. The wholesale operation resells electrical equipment and supplies to distributors, industrial accounts and people who build electrical equipment. From 1970-72, Dykman was part of the Bronco football team known as "The Cardiac Kids" and helped pull out a win in the 1971 Camellia Bowl over Chico State. He has served on the board and as president of the Boise State Alumni Association, on the Bronco Athletic Association board and the BSU Foundation board and has a family endowed scholarship.

Following the event, a reception will be held in the Student Union Jordan Ballroom. Free shuttle buses will be available to transport guests to and from the Student Union.

Graduates are also invited to attend a welcoming and congratulation event in the Bronco Gym beginning at 8 a.m. sponsored by the Boise State Alumni Association. The event features a continental breakfast, an opportunity for family and graduate portraits, a live DJ and other booths. For more information on this event, contact Casandra Sipes at 426-1831.
