Boise State ASBSU Hall of Fame and Service Award Winners Announced
Boise State University students, employees and organizations that contributed outstanding service to the university and community during the 2001-02 academic year were honored at a recognition dinner on April 24.
The Associated Students of Boise State University (ASBSU) Hall of Fame Awards were presented to the following:
• Angelina Metcalf, a senior nursing student from Boise, won the award given to an ASBSU-recognized student organization leader for her work as an officer of the Student Nurses Association (SNA). Her many contributions include serving as a representative at a national conference of the SNA, recruiting community professionals to speak at Boise State SNA events, chairing the Lions Mobile Health Screening Unit for Garden City Days 2001, assisting with the Red Cross blood drive, a food bank drive and the Salvation Army’s Adopt-a-Family program. Metcalf, who received the 2001 Outstanding Nursing Student Award, was recently named a 2002 Boise State Alumni Association Top Ten Scholar.
• Jennifer C. Harmon, a civil engineering major from Twin Falls and a 2002 Boise State Alumni Association Top Ten Scholar, received the ASBSU Outstanding Academic Achievement Award for her academic accomplishments combined with extensive community service. Harmon has been on the dean’s list every semester and received numerous academic honors. She has mentored local high school students through the Women in Technical Careers program, served as president of the Boise State chapter of the Society of Women Engineers, assisted with organizing the SWE regional conference, initiated a girls-only section of the PCS Lego program and worked with the Ada County Boys and Girls clubs.
• Colleen Foster, a senior social work major from Meridian, received the ASBSU Award for Community Service. Foster has served as vice president of the Organization for Social Workers for the past two years. An active member of the Volunteer Services Board, Foster served as the organization’s hunger and homeless coordinator for spring 2001 and community outreach coordinator for 2001-2002. She organized fall and spring volunteer fairs, encouraged students to volunteer in the community and helped organize a Red Cross blood drive. Her other activities include being a leader for the Girl Scouts, 4-H and the Treasure Valley Junior Grange.
• Doug Shanholtz, a former ASBSU president, received the ASBSU Alumni Award for significant contributions to the university. Shanholtz, currently president and CEO of P.E.F. Inc., has served for five years on the board of the Boise State Alumni Association, for three years on the board of the Boise State Foundation, for six years on the College of Business Advisory Board and as chair of the committee that celebrated BSU’s 25th anniversary as a university. He has also taught business and marketing classes at Boise State. His many community contributions include coordinating an international group of neurosurgeons to perform operations for economically disadvantaged people in Chile and serving on the Salvation Army Advisory Board.
Other ASBSU awards presented were presented to the following:
• Tam Q. Dinh, coordinator of the Boise State Cultural Center, received the David S. Taylor Service to Students Award. Dinh was nominated by student leaders for leadership role in sponsoring events such as the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, Intertribal Native Council Pow Wow, Island Rhythms Club Micronesian Festival and more. She expanded on the center’s role of providing education programs and resources for minority students by organizing a leadership retreat for ethnic student leaders, creating a welcoming environment for all students and taking a personal interest in students’ health and success. The award was named after David S. Taylor, Boise State’s former vice president for student affairs.
• Helen Lojek, a professor in the English department, received the award for Outstanding Student Organization Adviser. Lojek has been the adviser for Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honor society, for 16 years. As chairperson of Sigma Tau Delta’s international convention, which was held in Boise in March and featured internationally known speakers, Lojek gave Boise State students opportunities to present papers, moderate sessions and assist with organizing the convention. Under Lojek’s leadership Sigma Tau Delta accomplished many goals this academic year, including developing an award-winning Web page, reinstituting a poetry contest, hosting a Welcome Week poetry reading and encouraging Sigma Tau Delta members to participate in community service projects.
For being role models and mentors to other student leaders and for going beyond the call of duty to advance student life at Boise State ASBSU President’s Award for Distinguished Service went to the following students:
• China Veldhouse, a senior from Hawaii majoring in health sciences, received the Horizon Achievement Award for displaying exceptional potential to be a student leader.
• Brooke Baldwin, a senior from Idaho Falls majoring in political science, received the Marj Billings Award for her service to the community and to Boise State.
• Leo Morales, a junior from Mexico majoring in political science, received the Q. Dan Nabors Award for outstanding advocacy on behalf of students and the community.
• Imran Ali, a senior from Eagle majoring in political science with an emphasis in American government, received the Distinguished ASBSU Staff Award.
Service-Learning awards went to the following people for their exemplary contribution to the community through service-learning:
•Peter Lutze, a professor in the communication department, received the faculty award for his professional dedication to the community. Lutze has developed service-learning projects at Treasure Valley Television in which students film and produce television shows for nonprofit organizations.
• Phil Hawkins, volunteer activities coordinator at the Idaho State Veterans Home, received the agency award for providing students with opportunities to learn about history and community by spending time with veterans.
• Senior nursing students Milena Arthur, Moscow, and Ermelinda Garcia, Caldwell, received student awards for their efforts to coordinate and promote a BSU-led health fair for area farmworkers.
The following student received the Volunteer of the Year award:
• Valerie Tucker, a junior from Idaho Falls majoring in history, was recognized for her outstanding community service as a foster parent. She has helped more than 30 children by becoming a foster parent.
Awards for outstanding service within ASBSU went to the following students:
• Francisco Pedraza, a senior from Nampa majoring in political science.
• Erin Anderson, a senior from Boise majoring in political science.
• Brad Christensen, a junior from Idaho Falls majoring in communication.
• Doug Stokes, a junior from Idaho Falls majoring in marketing.
• Erin Granden, a senior from Caldwell majoring in computer service technology.
The following BSU employees received "OCNORB" (Bronco spelled backwards) awards for going beyond their duties to assist and support ASBSU:
• Debby Flores, ASBSU administrative assistant, has worked at Boise State for 16 years. Before assisting ASBSU in its daily operations, Flores was an office manager at the Pavilion.
• Kevin Israel, associate director of facilities and finance in campus recreation, has worked as an adviser and supervisor with Boise State students for 10 years.
The following Outstanding Student Organization of the Year awards were given:
• Organization of the Year — Women’s Lacrosse Club, Marci Jenson, president
• New Organization — Returning Women’s Discussion Group, Debby Woodall, president
• Academic/Professional — Student Nurses Association, Lauren Smith, president
• Religious — Institute Women’s Association, Kellee Carlson, president
• Greek — Alpha Chi Omega sorority, Nichole Purvis, president
• Cultural / Ethnic — Hui-O-Aloha, Leah Taala, president
• Residence Hall — Towers Hall Government, Kristy Brooks, president
• Special Interest — Single Parents’ Club, Danalyn Dolata, president
• Sports — Men’s Lacrosse Club, Kyle Gandiaga, president
• Honor Society — Honors Student Association, Kimberly Woods, president
