Celebrate Cinco De Mayo with Mariachi Music and More

Music by popular band Grupo Karibe, a jalapeno eating contest and a car show are just some of the highlighted events at Boise State University’s Cinco de Mayo 2002 Fiesta from noon 6 p.m. Sunday, May 5, at the Boise State Student Union Patio. The celebration, open to people of all ages, is presented by the Boise State Organizacion de Estudiantes Latino-Americanos.

Community members are invited to sample authentic Mexican food, watch folkloric dancers, view the crowning of Miss Cinco de Mayo and listen to Mariachi music. The fiesta will also include activities for children such as face painting, an “astrojump,” arts and crafts, pinatas and more.

Cinco de Mayo commemorates May 5, 1862, when the Mexican army fought the invading French army lead by Emperor Napoleaon III at the Battle of Puebla. The Mexican battle victory sparked the Mexican people to revolt and forced the French to withdraw their claim on Mexico City and dissolve their imposed governmental system.

All events are free but food prices will vary. For more information call 426-3038.

The concert is presented by the Boise State music department. For more information call 426-3980.
