Guest Pianist Presents Works of Avant-Garde Hungarian Composer
Guest pianist Dan Immel will present a recital featuring the works of innovative Hungarian composer Gyorgy Ligeti at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, in the Morrison Center Recital Hall. Admission is $5 adults, $3 seniors and free to students of all ages and Boise State faculty and staff.
Immel, a Boise State alumnus who studied with music department chair James Cook, has prepared the program as part of his doctoral dissertation at the University of Texas. He will play six of Ligeti’s etudes for piano, which Immel describes as "thrilling and musically inventive pieces."
Hungarian-born Ligeti is known for his innovative, complex and eclectic compositions and was a central figure in the European avant-garde movement. Prior to the Soviet invasion of Hungary, Ligeti fled to Vienna in 1956 and then to Hamburg. He established an international reputation with his 1961 composition "Atmospheres," which was used by Stanley Kubrick in his film "2001: A Space Odyssey."
The recital is presented by the Boise State music department. For more information call 426-3980.
