RALLY AND MARCH TO RAISE AWARENESS OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

The Boise State University Women’s Center will host the annual Take Back the Night rally and march on Thursday, April 18. This year’s theme is "Will Work for Change." The event is free and open to the public. Participants are asked to meet at the Centennial Amphitheatre on the Boise State campus at 6 p.m. The march, beginning at 6:15 p.m., will cross over the Friendship Bridge into Julia Davis Park, turn east to Broadway, south to University Drive, then back to the amphitheater.

Following the march, Boise chief of police Donald Pierce will speak, followed by Elena Rodriguez and Rabbi Laura Rappaport. Guitarist and singer Kim Niemiec will perform folk music.

The purpose of Take Back the Night is to raise awareness of violence against women and the attitudes, beliefs and behaviors which perpetuate this specific type of violence. Take Back the Night rallies have been held annually at different times of the year in cities across America since 1978. Marches are also held in Canada, Latin America, India and Europe. Take Back the Night originated in Germany in 1973 in response to a series of sexual assaults, rapes and murders.

Several community organizations are co-sponsoring the event: Idaho Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence, Mujeres Unidas de Idaho, Planned Parenthood of Idaho, Idaho Women's Network, Idaho NOW and the Women's and Children's Alliance.
