BOISE STATE CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT TEAM WINS NATIONAL COMPETITION
A team of students from the Boise State University construction management (CM) program captured the national title in the Mechanical Division at the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Region VI competition in Reno, Nev.
Four other Boise State CM teams fared well in the eight-state ASC Rocky Mountain Division competition, taking two seconds and two thirds. While the Mechanical Division was for the national crown, all other competitions were at the regional level.
The national championship team members were among 31 Boise State CM students who participated in the four-day event at the Reno Hilton earlier this month.
The championship team was comprised of senior co-captains Jayme Loomer, Sweet, and Brandon McCurdy, Boise, as well as Dustin Moe, a sophomore from Meridian; Tory Garcia, a senior from Rupert; Ryan Lind, a junior from Lolo, Mont.; James Ball, a senior from Hamer; and alternate Matthew Lanphier, a junior from Seattle. John Martin, chair of the Boise State CM program, was the faculty coach and Rebecca Mirsky was the team’s industry coach.
The Boise State team finished ahead of Texas A&M and Arizona State in the first-ever Mechanical Division national competition. Boise State was the only school to place in all categories.
Boise State teams also took second in the regional competition in Design Build and Heavy Civil divisions and third in the Commercial Building and Residential divisions.
In the Design Build Division team captain Mike Arrington, a senior from Twin Falls, was selected the Best Presenter. Other members of the runner-up team were Jason Derricott, a junior from Twin Falls; Mark Gerosin, a senior from Boise; Ashley Jacobs, a senior in drafting technology from Seattle; Bryan Shoemaker, a senior from Portland; and Landon Winter, a senior from Idaho Falls. Martin was the faculty coach and Kevin Link was the industry coach.
Members of the second-place Heavy Civil team were captain Rob Cunningham, a senior from Seattle; Steve Delgarno, a junior from Casper, Wyo.; Brian Klemme, a senior from Boise; Jeff Lindstrom, a junior from Paul; Bryan Warnock, a senior from Nampa; and Brent Wilson, a senior from Bend, Ore. Construction management professor Marv Gabert was the faculty coach and Dan Feldman was the industry coach.
The third-place Commercial Building team was comprised of captain Curt Osborne, a senior from Hagerman; Trey Crookston, Mike Gallegos, Jeff Tonkin and Kelly O’Kief, seniors from Boise; and Anna Sparrell, a junior from Boise. Gabert was the faculty coach.
The third-place Residential team was comprised of captain Adam Johnson, a junior from Twin Falls; Travis Shelton, a junior from Sandpoint; Josh Legg, a junior from Pendleton, Ore.; Rod Lockett, a senior from Boise; and Joel Niederklein, a junior from Boise. Martin was the faculty coach.
The competition problems are written and judged by industry professionals that the ASC has selected. The problems are technical in nature involving questions about business, engineering, planning and the methods that would be used to complete a project. The students are given two days to prepare and present both a written and oral component of the problem. Then, the judges compile the results and announce the winners at the conference’s awards luncheon.
Boise State’s construction management program is an accredited bachelor of science degree program offered through the university’s College of Engineering. Students in the program study general education, mathematics, engineering and business management as well as professional construction management.
ASC’s Region VI includes universities in Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Utah and Washington.
The construction management program first began at Boise State in 1979, and the construction management program has repeatedly won national and regional awards since that time.
