BOISE STATE’S DEBATE AND SPEECH TEAM FINISH SECOND AT CONFERENCE

The Boise State debate and speech team finished second in the Northwest Forensic Conference Division I final 2001-02 season standings after a strong showing at the final conference tournament held at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash. Feb. 14-17. This marked the fourteenth consecutive season Boise State has finished in the top three in the Northwest Forensic Conference, an affiliation of 41 colleges and universities from Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington.

Boise State team captain Imran Ali (sr., Eagle) was named the outstanding debater at the Whitman Tournament, and teamed with Misti Rutledge (sr., Kimberly) to finish second in the Open Division of Debate. In the Novice Debate Division, Boise State teams took three of the top five places with Patrick Connor (sr., Boise) and Nate Peterson (sr., Pocatello) placing first, Forrest Rees (so., Sequim, Wash.) and Greg Sasser (sr., Salem, Ore.) finishing in third place, and Nancy Greenway (sr., Caldwell) and Lacey Rammell-O'Brien (fr., Eagle) placing fifth. Sasser and Connor joined Ali on the all-tournament team.

Boise State's Ken Rock (jr., Coeur D’Alene) led the scoring in speech competition, placing first in both Informative Speaking and Impromptu Speaking and fifth in Program Oral Interpretation. Close behind were Nancy Henke (so., Boise), first in Persuasive Speaking and second in Informative Speaking, and Kristin Davidson (fr., Meridian), first in Novice Persuasive Speaking and fourth in Informative Speaking. Greenway was second in Persuasive Speaking and fifth in Impromptu Speaking. Ali finished third in Program Oral Interpretation and fourth in Speech to Entertain. Connor added a second place award in Novice Persuasive Speaking while Dan Breczinski (jr., Coeur D’Alene) and Peterson placed third and fourth respectively in Extemporaneous Speaking.

The Talkin' Broncos travel to Lincoln City, Ore. March 14-16 for the Great West Regional Tournament and conclude their season a week later at the National Parliamentary Debate Tournament in Denver, Colo.
