‘JERUSALEM: CITY OF PEACE’ CONCERT UNITES PEOPLE OF MANY FAITHS

Judaism, Islam and Christianity converge and often clash in the capital city of Israel. Yet Jerusalem means city of peace. A concert to urge people of all faiths and philosophies to unite for peace in Jerusalem will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, at St John’s Cathedral, 804 N. 9th St. Music with themes of peace and reconciliation from Jewish, Islamic and Christian traditions will be sung by Boise State University choirs, directed by professors Giselle Wyers and Jim Jirak, and the Ahavath Beth Israel choir, directed by Vern Lenz. The concert is titled "Jerusalem: City of Peace."

Admission is free. Donations will be accepted for the World Conference on Peace and Religion.

The program will close with the world premiere of "O Jerusalem" by Oregon composer Robert Kyr, founder of Waging Peace Through Singing, an international composing competition and choir festival centered around writing and singing works about peace and reconciliation. Kyr is the director of compositional studies at University of Oregon. Kyr will be in town March 10-12 working with the students as they prepare for this premiere.

"O Jerusalem" is part of a three-movement set, "Waging Peace." Kyr placed the movement first in the set as a general call for peace in the world, as the struggles in Jerusalem have persisted for centuries.

"The waging of peace is a dynamic process in which music has a crucial role to play," wrote Kyr. "By performing and hearing music from around the world, we are taking an active part in promoting understanding — and ultimately, peace — between the diverse peoples of humankind. As a communal art, choral music is an especially moving way to experience the unity of all people; it has the power to bring us together as peoples of all races, ethnicities and nationalities."
