"Mahalia: A Gospel Musical," will come to Boise State Universitys Morrison Center at 8 p.m. Friday, March 15. Presented by a professional touring company, the rousing musical serves as the keynote performance for Womens History Month 2002.
The grandchild of plantation slaves, famed gospel singer and civil rights activist Mahalia Jackson overcame great challenges and found strength and inspiration in her church and in her music. The musical follows her life through her childhood in a three-room shanty in New Orleans, her struggles with discrimination and prejudice and her eventual triumph as she performed in her distinct full-throated voice before presidents and royalty.
Tickets are now on sale through Select-a-Seat, 426-1766 or www.idahotickets.com. Cost is $8 students, $14 Boise State faculty and staff and $19 general. A $2 discount is available for group ticket purchases of 10 or more.
For more information on "Mahalia," contact the Boise State Womens Center at 426-4259. The production is one of 36 events and nine exhibitions celebrating Womens History Month. For a complete schedule of Womens History Month events, go to news.boisestate.edu.
