Jazz pianist and composer Deidre Rodman will be the guest artist at the Jazz Saturday workshop and concert on Saturday, March 2, in the Morrison Center Recital Hall. The workshop will be held at 1 p.m. and the concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Admission to both is free.
Rodman, a former Boise resident who now lives in New York City, will be joined by The Deidre Rodman Quintet, which was featured on her debut compact disc "Sun is Us." The quintet — Tony Malaby, tenor sax, Russ Johnson, trumpet, Bob Bowen, bass, Ari Hoening, drums, and Rodman on piano — is on tour in the Northwest.
Rodman also performs with and composes or arranges for several groups expressing a wide range of musical styles including: the four-woman ensemble The Lascivious Biddies, whose music Rodman describes as "fun tunes, including originals, and lots of wackiness"; The Raymond Scott Orchestrette, a seven-member group which includes electric zither and accordion; the 10-piece big band The Alphabet Lounge Band, which, Rodman describes as "mayhem in the vein of the Jazz Passengers"; and Roy Nathanson’s Fire at Keaton’s Bar and Grill, a theme concert in which Elvis Costello is the narrator and Debby Harry plays the bartender.
Rodman grew up in Boise listening to Gene Harris, jazz, blues and folk music. She began piano lessons at age 7 and started writing music as a young girl. After earning a bachelor’s degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Brigham Young University and a master’s degree in jazz studies from the University of North Texas, she traveled the world for a year playing on cruise ships. She moved to the Big Apple in 1997 to play with the Big Apple Circus.
