TIMBERLINE CLAIMS VARSITY, JV TEAM TITLES IN TEAMS COMPETITION AT BOISE STATE

Teams from Timberline High School captured the varsity championship and the junior varsity title at the southwest Idaho TEAMS (Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science) competition held at Boise State University recently.

The competition featured 15 varsity and eight JV teams from area high schools. The event was hosted by the Boise State College of Engineering and sponsored by Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS).

The Timberline A team took first place in the varsity division with 70 out of a possible 100 points. Team members are Jenny Phillips, Bijan Houle, Cara Machacek, Nathan Bigelow, Jeff Johnson, Tim Lipus, Jenny Carlson and Viola Fucsko.

Timberlines B team finished with 66 points while Bishop Kelly took third with 64 points. Other varsity teams were from Buhl, Nampa, Eagle, Nampa Christian and Emmett.

In the junior varsity competition the Timberline team of Michael Merkley, Chris DeLange, Jeremy Harper, Jeremy Fields, Scott Mitchell, Laura Arjona, Jyoti Sood and Halena Van Deusen took first place with 53 points.

Bishop Kelly was the JV runner-up with 48 points followed by Nampa Christian with 46. Other JV teams were from Horseshoe Bend and Buhl.

The competition is part of a national academic program and that helps prepare students for potential careers in engineering and the sciences. The students learn how the math and science concepts they are learning in school are applied to real-world problems. Each year more than 20,000 high school students participate at more than 100 TEAMS sites nationwide.

JETS will announce state and national rankings at a later date and will recognize the top 10 national teams at both the varsity and junior varsity level.
