TUBAS AND TROMBONES PRESENT EUPHONIOUS SOUNDS AT CONCERT
Tubas and trombones will share center stage at a concert by the Boise State University Tuba Ensemble and Trombone Choir at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, in the Morrison Center Recital Hall. Admission at the door is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and free to students of all ages and Boise State faculty and staff.
The Trombone Choir is comprised of 14 tenor and bass trombones, playing both original and transcribed works for multiple trombone ensembles. The group, conducted by David Mathie, professor of trombone at Boise State, plays classical and popular programs.
The program will feature two works by German Renaissance composer Hans Leo Hassler, as transcribed for trombone choir by Mathie — "Sing unto the Lord a New Song" and "Fair Maid, Thy Loveliness"; an arrangement of the "Adagio" from the "Third Symphony" by Saint-Saens; the new work by New York composer Eric Ewazen, "Fantasy and Double Fugue"; the theme from "Rawhide"; "Bagatelle" by Fridges Hidas; "Two Madrigals" by English composer Gordon Jacob; and "Tiger Rag," arranged by Jack Gale.
The Tuba Ensemble, directed by visiting Boise State tuba professor Michael Fischer, will perform Kenyon Wilson’s "Tuba Quartet No. 1 in C Minor," which won third place in the Harvey Phillips Tuba-Euphonium Quartet Composition Contest, and "Prelude and Rondino" by the late Richard Willis. Kenyon teaches at Valdosta State University in Georgia and Willis was a professor of composition at Baylor University.
