BOISE STATE RECEIVES ALBERTSON FOUNDATION GRANT FOR ED PROGRAM
Boise State University is the recipient of a $627,000 grant from the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation to provide scholarships for a new education program to enhance the skills and knowledge base of early childhood educators.
The grant will fund scholarships for a blended early childhood education/early childhood special education program at the university. Graduates from the new program will then be eligible for state certification to teach children from birth through third grade.
This new program will help us meet the needs of Idahos young children by preparing certified teachers, said Joyce Garrett, dean of Boise States College of Education. The scholarships will make it possible for interested students to enter the program.
Scholarships of up to $3,000 per year, renewable for three years, are being offered as part of the seven-year grant. Scholarships will be targeted to returning students, students articulating from two-year-programs, second career students and others.
The blended certificate program will offer courses in child development, curriculum development, family and community relations, assessment and evaluation of young children, technology enhanced learning and other courses aligned to Idahos standards for certification.
By providing scholarships, our goal is to help create a pool of educators whose skills go beyond the traditional K-6 certificate. Ultimately, its the children who will benefit, said Sharron Jarvis, executive director of the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation.
