LITERATURE FOR LUNCH DISCUSSES ‘THE BATTLE FOR GOD’ ON JAN. 31
Books that might give insight into current world events will be discussed during upcoming sessions of Literature for Lunch, a monthly book discussion supported by the Boise State University English Department.
The series, open and free to the public, kicks off Thursday, Jan. 31, with a discussion of “The Battle for God” by Karen Armstrong. The group meets at 12:10-1 p.m. at the Women’s and Children’s Alliance, 720 W. Washington.
Armstrong’s nonfiction book looks at the rise and fall of fundamentalism in Islam, Judaism, and Christianity during the last 500 years.
The series continues with a discussion of the Nobel Prize winning novel “Palace Walk” by Naguib Mahfouz on March 5, “In the Eye of the Sun” by Ahdaf Soueif on April 2, and “White Teeth” by Zadie Smith on May 7. Books can be ordered through the Vista Book Gallery, 890 S. Vista Ave. in the Vista Village shopping center, and a discount is given to group members. Books are also available at a discount at the BSU Bookstore, which will validate parking in the public lot behind the Student Union Building.
Over the past 21 years, Literature for Lunch has discussed nearly 200 books, and attracted hundreds of book readers ranging in age from 20 to 80-plus. As many as 50 people show up for monthly meetings, and the current mailing list tops 300. While group members have come and gone, there are a few who span the group’s entire 21-year-history.
