BOISE STATE FORENSICS TEAM PLACES SECOND AT TOURNAMENT

The Boise State University speech and debate team placed second among a field of 17 colleges from Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Texas and Washington at the Portland Community College Forensics Tournament held January 18-19 in Portland, Ore.

Boise State seniors Nancy Greenway (Caldwell), Christy Bowman (Twin Falls) and Imran Ali (Eagle) won nine of the Talkin’ Broncos’ 16 awards. Greenway was first in Informative Speaking and second in both Persuasive and Extemporaneous Speaking. Bowman finished second in Communication Analysis and third in Extemporaneous Speaking. Ali placed third in Speech to Entertain and fourth in Poetry Interpretation. Ali and Misti Rutledge (senior, Kimberly) also teamed to finish fifth in the Open Division of Debate. Bowman and Ken Rock (junior, Coeur d’Alene) placed ninth in Open Debate.

Other multiple award winners for Boise State included Kristin Davidson (freshman, Meridian) who was second in Informative Speaking and sixth in Persuasive Speaking and Lacey Rammell-O’Brien (freshman, Eagle), fifth in Informative Speaking and sixth in Impromptu Speaking. Rammell-O’Brien also teamed with Blake Lingle (junior, Boise) to place fifth in the Novice Division of Debate. Lingle also placed fourth in Informative Speaking. Patrick Connor (senior, Boise) finished fifth in Persuasive Speaking and along with partner Nate Peterson (senior, Pocatello) placed ninth in Novice Debate. Annah Merkley (freshman, Pocatello) finished sixth in Program Oral Interpretation to round out Boise State’s scoring.

Six of Boise State’s 12 debaters were named to the all-tournament team including Rutledge, Ali, Rock, Bowman, Rammell-O’Brien and Lingle.

Texas Southern University was the top school overall, with Boise State second, University of Alaska third, Lewis and Clark College of Portland fourth and Oregon State University fifth.

The Boise State team travels to Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash., in two weeks for the final Northwest Forensics Conference tournament of the season.
