RUBIN ‘HURRICANE’ CARTER SPEECH MOVED TO PAVILION, JAN. 24
The location of the keynote address by Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, for Boise State University’s Martin Luther King Jr. Human 2002 Rights Celebration at 7 p.m. Jan. 24, has been changed to The Pavilion due to heavy demand for the free passes.
Carter’s speech was scheduled for the Student Union Jordan Ballroom. As of Jan. 16, 2,000 free passes had been requested, exceeding the ballroom’s capacity. A new batch of passes has been printed. Passes are available free of charge at the Student Union Information Desk or by calling 426-1223.
Guests may attend the speech with or without passes. Those with passes will be seated first. Seating is general admission, and doors will open at 6 p.m. After 6:45 p.m., guests without passes will be admitted.
Carter will speak on "Justice and the Legal System: Where Do We Go From Here?" Now a human rights activist, Carter is a former professional boxer who served 19 years in prison on a murder conviction that was later overturned for racial bias. Carter is the executive director of the Toronto-based Association for the Defense of the Wrongly Convicted and speaks frequently on university campuses and to civic and legal organizations. The presentation will be American Sign Language interpreted.
A reception and book signing with Carter will follow at 8:30 p.m. He will sign the book "Hurricane: The Miraculous Journey of Rubin Carter" by Jim Hirsch, and other human rights texts will be available for purchase.
Carter’s visit is part of Boise State’s four-day focus on human rights, Jan. 21-24. The theme this year is "Racism: Understand It, Accept It, Defeat It." Activities will include a march to the Capitol Building on Jan. 21, the annual Martin Luther King Jr. dinner with speaker John Artis sponsored by the Black Student Alliance on Jan. 23, an essay contest for elementary school students and numerous workshops and volunteer projects.
