GUEST PIANIST SHARI RHOADS AND VOCALIST JOHN MURIELLO TO PERFORM
Guest pianist and conductor Shari Rhoads, who has coached some of the world’s most renowned singers, and baritone John Muriello, whose opera roles have taken him throughout the lower 48 states, will give a concert at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 24 in the Morrison Center Recital Hall. Admission to the concert, sponsored by the Boise State University Music department, is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and free for students and Boise State faculty and staff.
On their program will be "Before and After Summer," composer Gerald Finzi’s setting of Thomas Hardy poems exploring life and love; "Calligrammes," composer Francis Poulenc’s settings of the Guillaume Apollinaire’s World War I era poems reflecting on his life in the trenches and his memories of love affairs; and selections from Gustav Mahler’s "Des Knaben Wunderhorn," a collection of songs based on poems from an anthology of German romantic folksongs published about 1806.
Rhoads has worked extensively in the United States and Europe as a vocal coach/accompanist and conductor. She gives master classes each year at the Mozart Szenen International Music Festival. She has conducted numerous operas in Europe, including the world premiere of "Lachen der Schafe" in Switzerland, "Carmen," "Don Giovanni," "West Side Story," "Cosí Fan Tutte" and others. She has appeared in recital with Montserrat Caballé, José Carreras and Luis Lima. Rhoads is currently a lecturer at the University of Iowa School of Music.
Muriello recently performed the role of Captain Corcoran in H.M.S. Pinafore with Seaside Music Theatre in Daytona Beach. His stage roles have ranged from Guglielmo in "Cosí Fan Tutte" to Marcello in "La Boheme" and Voltaire in "Candide." He has worked with Opera Carolina, the Banff Centre in Canada, Lyric Opera Cleveland, L’Opera Francais de New York, Ohio Light Opera, La Fran Scena Opera di New York, and others. He currently teaches voice at the University of Iowa.
