PARKINSON PERFORMS ‘RHAPSODY’ WITH BOISE HIGH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA

It’s not often that high school musicians have an opportunity to perform on the same stage with seasoned professionals. But the Boise High Chamber Orchestra will have the opportunity to do exactly that at a benefit concert on Jan. 31 that features a performance of Gershwin’s classic “Rhapsody in Blue” by Boise State music professor and pianist Del Parkinson.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Boise High School auditorium, 1010 West Washington. It is the third annual effort to bring together the chamber orchestra and professional musicians to raise money for the school’s orchestra program, according to Wendy Hartman, conductor.

Some 22 professional musicians, including a number of Boise State music faculty, will join the select 21-member high school group to perform the classic Gershwin piece with Parkinson. Guest conductor Phil Hartman will direct “Rhapsody.” The concert also features baritone William Taylor, a former adjunct Boise State music professor, performing “Handel in the Strand” by Grainger. Other orchestral selections include Tchaikovsky’s “Souvenir de Florence,” Mendelssohn's “Sinfonia No. 12,” Vincent Youman’s “Without A Song,” and the Minnie’s Boys’ “Mama A Rainbow.”

The chamber orchestra, an audition group, has performed internationally in Canada and Austria.

Tickets cost $15 for adults and $8 for students and seniors. They can be purchased from members of the Boise High Chamber Orchestra or from the Boise High business office during school hours. For more information, contact the Boise High office at 338-3575, ext. 103.
