A contemporary dance to a Nine Inch Nails mix. Hip hop. Lyrical and thrash jazz. Other modern and classical dance styles. That’s what to expect when professional and emerging choreographers team up with some of the best young dancers from southern Idaho and eastern Oregon for a choreography festival with two performances at 7 p.m. June 21 and 22 at Stage II of the Morrison Center. Admission is $4 at the door.
The performances will culminate Summer DanceFest 2002, two weeks of workshops with distinguished professional dance faculty and choreographers for advanced and intermediate level dancers in their teens and twenties. The workshops run June 10-22.
The program of all-new choreography will include modern works by two 20-year-old choreographers, Yurek Hansen and Kaelen O’Shea. Hansen’s piece is set to two songs, "Just Like You Imagined" and "The Great Below" from Nine Inch Nails’ new CD "The Fragile." O’Shea’s piece, "Jade," incorporates music from rock bands Coldplay and Luna. Both Hansen and O’Shea are Idaho Dance Theatre company members.
Other new choreography on the program includes: a jazz/hip hop mix by Jaime Moore, a street-style thrash jazz and hip hop dancer and choreographer from Denver’s Damsels Dance Company who has performed with Puff Daddy and L.L. Cool J.; a modern dance to Ravel’s "String Quartet in F Major," by Helene Peterson, a choreographer who recently received her master’s degree in fine arts from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and has choreographed for several companies and theaters including the Idaho Shakespeare Festival; and a classical ballet by Marla Hansen, co-artistic director of Idaho Dance Theatre, director of dance at Boise State and director of Summer DanceFest.
