Nobel Laureate to Speak at Boise State on Academic Reform

Leon M. Lederman, 1988 winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics, will present “A Vision of 21st-Century High School: Project ARISE” at the Morrison Center, 6 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 6.

With Project ARISE (American Renaissance in Science Education) Lederman proposes to update the high school science curriculum by incorporating advances in cognition science and celebrating three major 20th-century revolutions: the understanding of the atom, the theory of relativity and the discovery of the structure and function of DNA. Lederman, world renowned specialist in high-energy physics and former Columbia University professor, advocates a three-year phsyics-chemistry-biology sequence in science education that will equip students with the knowledge and skills required to cope with the world’s problems.

Following the lecture, at 7:15 p.m., the Idaho-Utah chapter of the American Association of Physics Teachers will present “The Daring Physics Demo Show.” Boise State physics professors will demonstrate science fun for the entire family, including dueling vacuum guns, flying potatoes, hovering high school teachers and indoor lightning.

Both events are free. For additional information, contact Richard Reimann at 426-3691.
