Literature for Lunch Selects Books for Fall Discussions
Literature for Lunch, a monthly book discussion group supported by the Boise State University English department, has released its reading list for the fall semester. The biography, fiction and essay selections focus on the life and work of Charles Darwin, and on natural history.
The series is open and free to the public and meets at 12:10-1 p.m. at the WCA, 720 W. Washington. The selections include:
Thursday, Sept. 5: Charles Darwin, Voyaging, by Janet Browne. This first of Browne’s two volumes focuses on Darwin’s early years, the voyage of the Beagle, and his work to 1856, three years before Origin of Species appeared.
Wednesday, Oct. 2: The Lying Stones of Marrakech, by Stephen Jay Gould. Celebrated evolutionary theorist Gould, who died earlier this year, includes essays about Darwin and his contemporaries in this compilation.
Wednesday, Nov. 6: Mr. Darwin’s Shooter, by Roger McDonald. An Australian writer imagines the life of a young sailor who collected for Darwin on the voyage of the Beagle.
Wednesday, Dec. 4: Prodigal Summer, by Barbara Kingsolver. A chronicle of natural history in the lives of three women in southern Appalachia.
Books are ordered through the Vista Book Gallery, 890 S. Vista Ave. in the Vista Village shopping center, and a discount is given to group members. Books are also available at a discount at the Boise State Bookstore.
