Poet David Mutschlecner invites readers into his private philosophical world through 48 meditations in his new book of poetry, “Esse,” published by Ahsahta Press at Boise State University.
“Esse” draws on many sources: the works and visions of contemporary visual artists, the literary troves of Emily Dickenson and Dante Alighieri, the innocently profound questions of children, Christian spirituality and the daily workworld of a grocery store. So closely linked that they might be referred to as a single poem, Mutschlecner’s meditations spring from minute observations: one yellow leaf / tied while the stem / is still limber / to a door knocker can lead to a thought about Dickenson who exchanges questions / for a sunset exhalation, / but finds the questions again / like night-blooming flowers.
Poet Cole Swenson writes of “Esse,” “Returning always to the question of essence, but from constantly shifting angles, [Mutschlecner] manages to draw parallels between the living world and the living body, narrowing ever closer to the inceptive name / where I too might again / be present.”
Mutschlecner, who holds degrees from Indiana University and St. John’s College in Santa Fe, N.M., is author of a previous collection, “Veils” with Stride Press, as well as the chapbook “Qualities of Resonance” with Paradox Press. He lives in News Mexico and makes his living in the grocery business, while continuing to write and to pursue his interests in philosophy.
Ahsahta, Mandan Indian for “Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep,” has published more than 50 volumes during its 26 years of publishing, including books by such-well known poets as Sandra
Alcosser, David Baker, Linda Bierds, Katharine Coles, Wyn Cooper, Leo Romero and Carolyne Wright.
