BOISE STATE CLUBS CO-SPONSOR ANNUAL MARROW DONOR DRIVE
The fifth annual Diana Lamm Memorial Marrow Donor Drive, co-sponsored by Boise State University’s Societas Biophilia biology club and the Pre-Med club, will be held Wednesday, April 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Gipson Room and the Johnson Room, both on the first floor of the Student Union Building.
The drive, hosted by Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center and St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center, is an effort to increase the pool of possible donors for patients in need of marrow transplants. Only a small blood sample will be taken from individuals in a non-invasive procedure. The samples will then be analyzed and the information stored in a database. Doctors can use the database to locate individuals with compatible blood for transplant patients. There is no obligation to donate marrow once contacted. There is a special need to increase the number of minorities in the database, since patients have more success in finding a match within their own ethnic group.
Diana Lamm was a lab instructor in Boise State’s chemistry department. After a four-year battle with cancer, Lamm died in 1997 at the age of 52. The marrow donor drive is held in her honor in the hope of saving the lives of other cancer victims.
