Enjoy authentic Micronesian culinary delicacies and music and dancing of Pacific Island cultures at the second annual Island Rhythms Festival from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, March 23, in the Boise State University Student Union Jordan Ballroom. The dinner and dance festival is sponsored by Boise State Island Rhythms club, a group of students from the Micronesian Islands. Tickets for the festival go on sale March 4 at Select-a-Seat.

New to this years festival is a booth with items from Micronesia. The booth, located outside of the Jordan Ballroom, will open at 6 p.m. and admission is free. Items for sale will include baskets handmade with coconut leaves, woven bird decorations and other artifacts.

The Island Rhythms dancers will demonstrate historical dances such as their ancestral stick dance and dances influenced by Spains reign of the Islands.

The menu will include these island specialties: a 150-pound roast pig, vegetable stirfry, banana with coconut milk, red rice, bisteak (beef with sauce), sashimi and fish with coconut milk. A variety of desserts will be offered, papaya turnover, ahu (coconut meat soup) and/or api-gigi (coconut dessert cooked in banana leaves).

This festival is an opportunity to learn about cultures of the Micronesian Pacific Islanders and their lifestyles. Micronesia is the group of many small islands located south of Japan and east of the Philippines, but not a part of either country. In the northern region, Northern Mariana Islands is a commonwealth and U.S. territory. Further south, the Federated States of Micronesia, which includes Yap, Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei and many smaller islands, is an independent member of the United Nations. Also part of Micronesia are the Marshall Islands and others.

Tickets, available at Select-a-Seat, are $12 for adults, $7 for seniors and children ages 3-12, $5 for Boise State students and free for children 2 and under. Select-a-Seat service fees are an additional $1 per ticket at walk-up outlets and $2 per ticket on Web and phone orders, plus a $2 per order fee on phone purchases. Tickets may be purchased at Select-a-Seat outlets, online at www.idahotickets.com or by calling 426-1494 or 426-1766. Any remaining tickets will be sold at the door for an additional $2 per ticket.
