The Student Union Jordan Ballroom at Boise State University will resonate with the sound of Native American drumming and dancing at the ninth annual Pow Wow March 16 and 17. The Pow Wow is free and open to the general public; donations will be accepted.
Grand entry is at noon both days. Dancing will continue until midnight Saturday and 5 p.m. Sunday.
The Pow Wow is presented by the Inter-tribal Native Council, which includes members from many different tribes throughout the West and Midwest.
Tribal drums from the Intermountain area will compete for $7,000 in cash prizes in the following areas: Jingle Dance, Fancy Shawl, Traditional, Grass Dance and Fancy Dance. There will be a first and second prize in all categories, excluding children 11 and under.
Host drum will be the Sacred Nation drum from Winslow, Ariz. Master of Ceremonies will be Isadore Gourneau III; the head man dancer will be Pete Hill of Boise and head woman dancer will be Cheryl Roubideaux of Owyhee, Nev.
The Pow Wow is being held in conjunction with the Boise State University First Nations Conference, which begins March 14 with a keynote address by author, poet, screenwriter and director Sherman Alexie.
