The Boise State University theatre arts department will perform French playwright Moliere’s classic comedy "Tartuffe" April 18-21 and 24-27 at the Morrison Center Stage II. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. each evening, with the exception of a 2 p.m. curtain Sunday, April 21.

The stinging satire focuses on 17th century religious hypocrisy and the follies of self-deception. Orgon, a wealthy Frenchman, has come under the spell of a pious zealot named Tartuffe. Everyone in Orgon’s household sees Tartuffe as an imposter except Orgon and his mother. Tartuffe becomes so entrenched in the household that the master promises him his own daughter and disinherits his son before Tartuffe’s true character is revealed.

When first staged in 1664, the play was banned by King Louis XIV, who nonetheless read it aloud to a court audience. Three years later, "Tartuffe" was presented under a false title, prompting the police to close the theater and the church to threaten excommunication for anyone associated with the play. The brouhaha arose when Moliere’s attempt to ridicule religious hypocrites was misinterpreted as a critique of religion itself. Permission to perform the play in public was finally granted in 1669 and it has since come to be recognized as one of the world’s all-time great comedies.

The production is suitable for all ages, but may be more enjoyable for those over 12. Tickets are $9 general admission, $7 for seniors, non-Boise State students and Boise State alumni and free to Boise State students, faculty and staff. Tickets are available at Select-a-Seat outlets, or by calling 426-1766 or visiting www.idahotickets.com. Free tickets for students and staff and reduced tickets for alumni are available at on-campus Select-a-Seat locations only.
