Boise State Begins 4 1/2 Day Week to Reduce Energy Use
Starting this week, Boise State will close most of its buildings on Friday afternoons during the summer to conserve energy and reduce cooling expenses. In addition, the university has moved to a four-day academic schedule for the current summer session.
By not offering classes on Fridays and reducing building operation hours, Boise State expects to trim its cooling and electrical expenses by at least $35,000 this summer.
In previous years the university offered classes five days a week during the summer. Class times this summer will be lengthened each day to accommodate for the shorter week. Employees will continue to work a 40-hour week by extending the work day one hour on Mondays through Thursdays and working four hours on Fridays.
Most university business offices will close at 11:30 a.m. on Fridays through Aug. 16.
Auxiliary units such as the Student Union and Pavilion are exempt from the reduced hours because they generate revenue from off-campus clients who use the facilities.
